Letters from Roscoe – Doing Things for the Right Reason

Doing things for the Right Reason … Lately things have been pretty hard around here.  Cindy’s mom passed away, and she is still there in Florida trying to deal with her Mom’s estate.  My wife is a strong woman, she is a woman of even stronger faith and I know she will get through this and be the stronger for it. Things have also been quiet too.  Ever since the day her Mom passed, I haven’t felt the Lord urging…

I know I’ve already written to you once today, but when God is speaking to you, you do what he says. Picture this. You’re riding the roller coaster at an amusement park.  It’s been an awesome ride!  Your car comes bounding over the last peak and begins its descent down into the station where you will disembark.  Your heartbeat is beginning to slow, your breathing starting to even out.  As your car glides into the station you look left to…

Forgiveness. You would think it should be easy, but sometimes it is really hard to do. Lately, I have had the recurring notion that I need to forgive my stepfather for the many, many wrongs that he perpetrated against my Mother, my sisters and me.  I’ve thought about telling him face to face, but I really don’t want to speak to the man, so then I considered writing him a letter.  In it, I would tell him ‘I forgive you.’…

One of the comments I received about my last post was this one: “I love the letters from Roscoe and I have been blessed to witness the changes it has bestowed upon his new found life ,and while watching it has sparked an interest in myself and allowed me to seek out this new life as well so please please Roscoe don’t stop sharing ur journey with us allow us the glory to see just how much we all need…

Letters from Roscoe

Why am I writing this?  For whose glory is it anyway? Often since I became a Christian in Training and started writing this series of ‘Letters from Roscoe’,  I have had to ask myself ‘Who are you doing this for?’.   That thought always makes me stop and do some soul searching. The answer is:  “I write this for HIM.” I write this in the hope that YOU will read it.  I write it in the hope that YOU will think about it.…

Letters from Roscoe

I recently read a book called ‘When God Winks at You’.  The book passed along numerous peoples own stories about how God had worked in their lives and then let them know that He had done it.  Each little event (well, some were major) was called a God Wink.  While I enjoyed the book and it’s subject matter,  I didn’t like the way the book read; it made ‘God Winks’ sound like a novelty item and they aren’t. But I believe in God,…

Letters from Roscoe

Recently, I was up at the Loudon County Courthouse. It was a Jury Selection day and knowing I was going to be sitting and waiting a while I had brought my Bible to read.  I had been sitting there reading for about 45 minutes to an hour.  Being new to the ‘Christian in Training’ role, I didn’t quite know how to respond when a woman who had been sitting next to me leaned over and said… “Would you pray for…

Howdy Folks… Sometimes you are trying to understand something and have even opted to discuss it openly.  Then  suddenly and without any further action on your part, the answer is provided in an unexpected manner. Let me explain. In the last ‘Letter from Roscoe’ a discussion started the other day was in response to the comment of a reader who had raised the issue; ‘How do you know for sure that you’re saved?’  Well, out of the blue; Brother Eddie…

Letters from Roscoe

Howdy folks! Yesterday, we had our first person to comment on one of the ‘Letters from Roscoe’ posts.  Another ‘Christian in Training’ it turns out!  It takes courage to be the first person to stand up and volunteer to be the first one to tell their story.  Even in cyberspace. The response I received to yesterday’s post was this: “I accepted Jesus as my Savior in VBS many moons ago (around 50 plus yrs.). I didn’t really realize what that…

Letters from Roscoe

OK.  You probably know by now, my name is not Roscoe. You call me Jim, my wife and close friends call me Tip, my family (Four sisters!) call me Rodney.  My great-grandson’s nickname is ‘Roscoe’, and no, he is not happy with the moniker.  When I call him ‘Roscoe’ he quickly reminds me that “My name is HUNTER!”  But the name Roscoe is the nickname that I gave him, and I really can’t remember why.  But it was in reference to James Best’s…

Letters from Roscoe

Howdy!  It’s me, Roscoe!  I found out that at least one person was reading these posts and getting something out of my story.  So I’ll continue to tell you about my journey to become a Christian in Training.  But first, let me ask:  Are you a Christian? There’s an old saying; ‘You are the company you keep. So surround yourself with good people.’   Once I decided to put my faith in Jesus Christ, without really realizing it, I began…

Roscoe here, Christian in Training. Like I was saying, I continued to come to Church. And there I was, questioning God even more.  And I came to Sunday School and learned a little bit more each time.  I joined the church.  This church that was so different than any Church I had ever been to before.  I became a ‘SMO’.  Some of you may know what that is, I didn’t.  But I learned.  It means;  ‘a Sunday Morning Only’ person.   Yes, it…
